Homemade, Cold Fighting Elderberry Syrup
A couple of years ago a friend of mine shared the amazing benefits of elderberry syrup and even shared her recipe so I can make my own at home.
The benefits that peaked my interest was it helps to build your immune system and can even help lessen the duration and symptom severity of a cold or the flu. And guess what?!
It’s super simple to make at home!

Elderberry Syrup Recipe
This cherished recipe for Elderberry Syrup is made with simple, natural ingredients – elderberries, water and honey.
Elderberry Syrup Ingredients
1 cup of organic dried elderberries – (we use these)
3 cups of filtered water – (I researched best water filter that we use)
1 ½ cups of Local, organic raw, unfiltered honey
If you can’t get local honey, I recommend this brand. Local honey has pollen (and allergens) from your region.
Directions – How to Make
Add water and elderberries to a medium saucepan.
Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for about 30 minutes
Mash the elderberries to release any remaining juice.
Strain mixture into a glass bowl use a cheesecloth.
When the liquid has cooled to room temperature stir in the raw honey and mix thoroughly.
It is best to store the syrup in amber bottles and if refrigerated it will last many months. This recipe makes enough to fill a large canning jar.
*Please do not make this recipe using raw elderberries.

Dosage – How to Use Elderberry Syrup
Preventative: 1 teaspoon 1-2 times a day is sufficient.
Fighting Illness: Use up to 3 teaspoons 4 times a day.
For young children I half the dosage and I personally do not give until over 1 year of age due to the raw honey, but others have heated the syrup on the stove before administering to pasteurize the honey.
Creative Uses
- Put on pancakes, waffles and oatmeal.
- Mix in Shakes
- Put in Hot Tea
